Oscillons in Driven Granular Systems

چکیده
In a vertically-oscillated shallow layer of beads, long-lived localized structures called ’oscillons’ have been observed. These structures oscillate at half of the driving frequency, and may be either in phase or directly out of phase with the driving force at the peak of a cycle. Oscillons interact with eachother and have been observed form linear polymer-like structures and also 2D lattices. Oscillons have also been observed in a variety of other systems, including the acoustics of stellar envelopes, networks of parametrically driven damped oscillators , and the Swift-Hohenberg model.

A fluid-like model of vibrated granular layers: Linear stability, kinks, and oscillons
A continuum model is proposed for the dynamics of shallow non-cohesive granular layers driven by vertical vibration of a horizontal rigid plate in vacuo. The granular mass is assumed to behave as a Newtonian liquid while in flight and to exhibit a solid-like rebound from the vibrating plate. The simple version explored here involves two constant parameters, a kinematic viscosity and a coefficie...

متن کاملNodal Two-Dimensional Solitons in Nonlinear Parametric Resonance
The parametrically driven damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation serves as an amplitude equation for a variety of resonantly forced oscillatory systems on the plane. In this note, we consider its nodal soliton solutions. We show that although the nodal solitons are stable against radially-symmetric perturbations for sufficiently large damping coefficients, they are always unstable to azimuthal p...
متن کاملStabilization mechanism for two-dimensional solitons in nonlinear parametric resonance
We consider a simple model system supporting stable solitons in two dimensions. The system is the parametrically driven damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and the soliton stabilises for sufficiently strong damping. The purpose of this note is to elucidate the stabilisation mechanism; we do this by reducing the partial differential equation to a finite-dimensional dynamical system. Our concl...
متن کاملGas-driven subharmonic waves in a vibrated two-phase granular material.
Vibrated powders exhibit striking phenomena: subharmonic waves, oscillons, convection, heaping, and even bubbling. We demonstrate novel rectangular profile subharmonic waves for vibrated granular material, that occur uniquely in the two-phase case of grains, and a fluid, such as air. These waves differ substantially from those for the gas-free case, exhibit different dispersion relations, and o...
